Kanazawa

2003.Jun.02

Even though I only spent one day in Kanazawa, I think this is quite an interesting town. Judging from my first impression, I could well imagine living there. Both worlds, the new one and the Higashi Geisha District old one are present here; Katamachi is the busy bustling new part of it with everything modern big cities offer. But there are also old, very well preserved areas which are literally plastered with shrines. The Higashi Geisha District is comparable to the old, preserved, street in Takayama, but not as crammed with tourists. These older parts are also quite wide. I was strolling north of Asano river, around the Higashi Geisha District for quite some time. And the best of it: even though traditional and preserved, these are living areas! People actually do live here, these old houses in the narrow streets are their homes. A place I much like.

I was also curious what Kenroku-en had to offer. After all, it is one of the most famous gardens in Japan. Well, to be honest, I didn't think it was worth all that fuss. Nice, ok, but nothing that would make it stand out so much among the other gardens in Japan.
Kanazawa-jo, the castle, was more appealing to me. It is, however, very obviously a new, reconstructed building. Nice to watch, built in the old style, but all new.
